The European bilberry is a tiny dark blueish-purple summer berry. In North America it is known as the whortleberry. The botanical name for the bilberry is Vaccinium myrtillus .
The European bilberry is a close relative of American blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries. Bilberries are very rich in natural antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acids and is great in the defense against cell damaging free radicals. This little super berry helps support digestion, brain functions, and eye functions and also help promote healthy blood sugar levels and blood circulation and helps maintain cholesterol within normal levels. Its antioxidants fight and can even reverse the signs of aging.
Additional research has confirmed the blueberry’s role in supporting cardiovascular health, reducing undesirable LDL cholesterol levels, and protecting the heart muscle and brain against damage. A cousin of the European bilberry, which has been shown to improve night vision and prevent tired eyes, the blueberry has also been credited with benefiting eye health and reducing eye fatigue.
