Vitamin E is found in foods such as vegetable oils and shortening, meat, eggs, milk, and leafy vegetables. Vitamin E is important for many processes in the body.

Vitamin E has antioxidant properties that are due to their capability to bind with reactive oxygen species. Oxidation takes place when electrons are lost and transferred to other compounds. These are a series of reactions that are damaging to the cells as free radicals are constantly formed — which later on make other compounds undergo oxidation as well. With the free bonds present in the vitamin E molecular structure, it can accommodate the electrons and prevent some important molecules of our body from undergoing oxidation.

Vitamin E can be used as a leave-on conditioner for dry and damaged hair. A small amount daily will treat dry hair and heal the hair shafts. As alpha-tocopherol is the main compound, most manufacturers concentrate only on this compound. Alpha-tocopherol in its natural form will be listed on a label as ‘d’ or ‘D’ whereas synthetic alpha-tocopherol will be listed as ‘dl’ or ‘DL’. Vitamin E is also available in foods that have been fortified with them, like certain cereals. In this case, the fact will be stated on the label.
