Acerola is basically a plant which is native to Southern and Central America and it will produce small edible fruits and these fruits will strongly resemble cherries and the name alternate to cherries given to them is Barbados cherry , Puerto Rican Cherry, and West Indies Cherry. This fruit is utilized in fresh as well as preserved forms.

Acerola is a type of cherry-like tropical fruit, of sweet raspberry-like flavor, and famously known for it’s high Vitamin C content. Common name: Barbados Cherry.

Acerola (Malpighia glabra L.) is a tropical fruit native to Mexico, Central and South America. Rich in antioxidants (including vitamin C and anthocyanins ), acerola is often sold in supplement and juice form. Proponents claim that acerola offers a wide range of health benefits.

Acerola cherries contain vitamin C and, as discussed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,012,942 and 3,086,915 and Japanese Laid-open application 2-200610, it is known to extract vitamin C from them for several different uses. In the present invention, however, the acerola cherry fermentate is substantially free from any substantial amount of vitamin C (ascorbic acid or its derivatives). In other words, the acerola cherry does not contain more than about 1% by weight, preferably no greater than about 0.1%, and more preferably no greater than about 0.01% of the acerola cherry fermentate. Most preferably, the ascorbic acid, if present, is present in an amount no greater than about 0.005% of the acerola cherry fermentate.
